Chores taking turns: it shows whose turn it is

A chore rota without a sheet of paper on the fridge: in Familienplaner, a task such as “Take the bins out” comes back by itself, and after each tick the next person is up. The whole family can see who is doing the bins this week and who is laying the table. Children tick off their own chores on the family display, and they don’t need an account of their own for it.

How a task takes turns

  1. Create the task

Under “Tasks”, tap “New task” and write what needs doing, for example “Take the bins out”. Under “Due on” you choose the first day, and under “Who?” the person who starts.

  2. Choose how often it repeats

Under “Repeat”, the task comes back daily, weekly, every two weeks or monthly. For that it needs a date: without “Due on” it stays a one-off task.

  3. Switch on taking turns

As soon as the task repeats, “Taking turns” appears. There you tap the family members who take turns, at least two and no more than ten. Who comes after whom follows the order of your family.

  4. Tick it off, and the next person is up

Whoever is finished ticks the task off. It then sits with the next person, with the next date, and a short message says when it is due again.

The tasks page: what is due today and what has been left

On the “Tasks” page, open tasks are sorted into four groups: “Overdue”, “Today”, “Coming up” and “No date”. Each line shows whose turn it is. If a task comes back, it says how often, and a task that rotates also carries the label “taking turns”.

Tapping a circle shows that person’s tasks, along with those that belong to nobody in particular. That way Ben looks only at his own chores, and Mum sees what is waiting for her.

Ticked off too soon? “Undo” brings the task back. The next one, created when you ticked it, disappears again as long as nobody has done it yet. Recently finished tasks are listed further down under “Done”.

Children tick off their chores on the family display

You add children as family members with a name and a colour, but without an account. They still see their tasks: on the family display, a tablet in the kitchen where nobody is signed in. A child ticks off a task there with one finger, and if it takes turns, the next family member is up, just as on the “Tasks” page.

Tapping a child’s name opens their own view with large tick boxes. It shows their tasks and those without a person, as far as they are due today, overdue or have no date. If nobody touches the tablet for a minute and a half, it goes back to the whole family’s view.

Whatever is ticked off on the display stays there, crossed out, for a day. If a child tapped the wrong one, a second tap opens the task again.

Tasks in “Today” and in the calendar

What is due today also appears in “Today”, the calendar’s start view, next to the day’s events. A task that has been waiting a while shows up there on today’s date as overdue. You can tick it off there too, with the same effect: for a task that takes turns, the next person is up afterwards.

A quicker way to add a task is “New entry”: you write a sentence such as “Ben pack PE kit tomorrow”, and an AI fills in the task form with the title, the day and the person. Whether the task repeats and takes turns is something you set there yourself before you add it.

What Familienplaner doesn’t do with tasks

  • The next person is only up once the task is ticked off. If it is left undone, it stays with the same person under “Overdue” until somebody does it.
  • Taking turns only works with a repetition, and a repetition needs a date. A task without a date belongs to one person or to nobody in particular.
  • Missed turns are not made up: if a weekly task is only ticked off after two weeks, it is due once more afterwards, on the next matching day after today.
  • Tasks have no time of day, only a date. Anything that has to happen at a set time goes in as an event.
  • There are no points, rewards or leaderboards. Whether ticking something off earns a treat is for your family to agree on.
  • Nobody creates tasks on the family display: new tasks, repetitions and turns are set up on the “Tasks” page, and without a connection even ticking off is locked on the display.

Frequently asked questions about chores taking turns

How exactly does “Taking turns” work?

You choose at least two and no more than ten family members. The task starts with the person under “Who?”. Every time it is ticked off, the next one is created: with the next date and with the next person in line. After the last person, it is the first one’s turn again.

What happens if somebody doesn’t do their task?

Then it stays with that person and moves to “Overdue” after its due date. The rota waits until somebody ticks it off. If another family member ticks it off, a parent for instance, it still moves on: to the person after the one whose turn it was.

Do children need an account to tick things off?

No. Children are family members without an account of their own. They can tick things off on the family display, where nobody is signed in, and on the “Tasks” page a parent ticks off for them.

Can I use this as a chore chart for the kids?

Yes. Laying the table, watering the plants or feeding the cat become repeating tasks, taking turns between brothers and sisters if you like. Unlike a chore chart on paper, the rota moves on by itself, and on the display each child sees what is due today. Which chores suit which age is up to you; Familienplaner doesn’t come with templates.

Do the children only see their own tasks on the tablet?

In their own view, yes: tapping their name shows that child’s tasks and those without a person, as far as they are due today, overdue or have no date. The family view lists everyone’s open tasks that have no date, are overdue or are due within the next 13 days, each with the name of whoever’s turn it is.

Can a task also take turns every two weeks or monthly?

Yes. Under “Repeat” you can choose daily, weekly, every two weeks or monthly, and taking turns works with each of them. Monthly tasks keep the same day of the month; if that day doesn’t exist, such as the 31st in April, the task is due on the last day of the month.
