Weather in “Today”: what the children can wear, in pictures

Wellies or trainers, woolly hat or sun hat? Once you have entered your town, Familienplaner shows the children what to wear today in a way they understand without reading: in “Today”, with pictures from head to toe and one word under each picture. The pictures follow fixed rules from the forecast, with no AI involved.

How the weather gets into your calendar

  1. Enter your town

Whoever manages the family enters your town in the settings under “Weather”, by postcode or name. The town is optional; without it there is no weather in the calendar.

  2. Look at “Today” in the morning

At the top of “Today” you see the day’s weather with a symbol for sun, cloud or rain, the morning temperature and the high, for example 6° → 14°.

  3. Look at the pictures

Next to it, pictures from head to toe show what the children can wear today, each with a word underneath. Whatever is needed only later, such as a raincoat and wellies for the afternoon showers, appears under “Take along”, and whatever comes off during the day under “Take off later”.

  4. Show them large

A tap on the pictures opens “Today you’re wearing”: very large pictures for children who can’t read yet, and a big “Close” button.

Fixed rules instead of AI

The pictures don’t come from an AI. Familienplaner works them out with fixed rules from the forecast: from the feels-like temperature in the morning, the high, the rain in the morning and over the day, snow, the UV index and hours of sunshine. Wind counts through the feels-like temperature: when it blows hard, the warm jacket turns into a winter coat sooner.

If the ground is still wet from rain overnight, rain trousers and wellies appear even without new rain. The pictures don’t show an umbrella: at nursery a raincoat is more practical, and in the calendar the umbrella is the sign for school holidays.

Familienplaner set the thresholds for temperature, rain and sun itself, as a starting point rather than a standard. Only sun protection from UV index 3 follows the WHO’s recommendation.

Tips under the pictures

Whatever a picture can’t show appears as a short line underneath, at most three a day: for example “Layers that can come off later” when a cool morning turns into a warm day, or “Pack a warmer jacket for the afternoon” when it gets much colder later on. On hot days it says “Light clothes, pack a water bottle”.

When you open the day, the calendar also says which town the tips are for and how recent the forecast is, with the line “The weather may turn out differently; wind only counts through the feels-like temperature.”

The family display shows the weather too: large in today’s card, with everything about what to wear written out as sentences, without pictures; tomorrow only the symbol with the morning and high temperatures, the day after only the symbol and the high. Set to seven days, it shows only the symbol and the high for each day, plus everything about what to wear for today.

Which places are covered, and what the weather service learns

Weather is available for places in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, France and Italy. The weather shown is the weather at home, even while you are away.

The forecast comes from the Norwegian weather service MET Norway under the CC BY 4.0 licence; an hourly run fetches new forecasts as soon as they are due. Familienplaner requests them from its servers in Frankfurt, and the weather service learns the rounded coordinates of the place, but nothing about you or your devices.

What the weather in Familienplaner can’t do

  • It is not a weather warning: Familienplaner doesn’t warn about storms, thunderstorms, ice or heat. You will find warnings from your country’s weather service.
  • It doesn’t show the chance of rain or the wind speed; wind only feeds into the pictures through the feels-like temperature.
  • The pictures are the same for all the children in the family, not per child or by age. What a baby or an older schoolchild needs is up to you.
  • Pictures and tips are for today only; the “Tomorrow” card shows just a symbol and the temperatures.
  • Without a town entered, or with a forecast older than twelve hours, no weather appears rather than an outdated one.
  • The weather may turn out differently from the forecast. A quick look out of the window in the morning does no harm.

Frequently asked questions about weather and clothes

Where does the forecast come from?

From MET Norway, the Norwegian weather service, under the CC BY 4.0 licence. When you open a day, it says how recent the forecast shown is, with the way to the sources below.

Are the pictures meant for every age?

No, they are the same for all children. They follow fixed thresholds for temperature, rain, snow and sun; for a baby or an older child you decide yourself what fits.

Does the app warn about severe weather?

No. The calendar shows a thunderstorm as a symbol and a word, and heat with the tip “Light clothes, pack a water bottle”, but there is no warning about storms, thunderstorms, ice or heat. That is what your country’s weather service is for.

Why don’t I see any weather?

Usually the town is missing: whoever manages the family enters it in the settings under “Weather”. If it is there, perhaps the forecast is older than twelve hours; Familienplaner then hides the weather until a new one arrives. And “Show the weather in the calendar and on the family display” can switch it off altogether.

Does it work in France or Italy too?

Yes, places there are covered just like in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. School and public holidays, on the other hand, are only available for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

What do the children see when they tap the pictures?

The view “Today you’re wearing”: the same pictures very large, each with its word, and what to take along in a separate area, with no numbers. “Close” takes you back to the calendar.
