A family packing list: everyone sees what is still missing
A family packing list that everyone can see: beside the shopping list, Familienplaner keeps further lists, for the holiday, the swimming pool or the next day trip. A template brings the usual things, you untick what you don’t need, and while packing everyone ticks off what is already in the suitcase. The meal plan holds what there is for lunch and dinner, and one tap puts the ingredients on the shopping list.
How a packing list comes about
Create a new list
At the top of the area “Lists” you find the shopping list and your further lists. There you tap “New list”.
Choose a template or start empty
Under “Template” you choose “Holiday”, “Swimming pool” or “Day trip”, or you start with “Empty”. The list takes its name and emoji from the template; you can change both.
Untick what you don’t need
Under “What goes on the list” you see the entries of the template, all ticked. Untick what you are not taking, then tap “Create list”.
Tick off while packing
The new list appears as a chip beside the shopping list. Whoever packs ticks off; what is still missing stays under “Still open”, for everyone in the family.
Further lists beside the shopping list
Beside the shopping list you keep further lists, such as a packing list for the holiday, the things for the swimming pool or what has to go to a children’s birthday party. At the top of the area “Lists” each one is a chip, the shopping list first; a tap opens it.
A list works like the shopping list: under “What is missing?” you write what to add, also several things separated by commas. What someone ticks off is ticked off for everyone, and “Remove done items” only clears the list that is open.
The pencil next to the name renames a list or gives it another emoji; the bin deletes it with its entries after asking first.
Templates for a holiday, the swimming pool and a day trip
Whoever packs for a whole family easily forgets the health insurance cards or the cuddly toy. The template “Holiday” brings 20 entries, from the passports via chargers and sun cream to the snacks for the journey; “Swimming pool” and “Day trip” bring 10 each.
The entries of a template are ordinary entries, and you add what belongs to your family. The template itself stays as it is.
The shopping list by department
What is still to buy stands sorted by department, in this order: fruit and vegetables, bread and bakery, dairy and chilled, meat and fish, frozen, food cupboard, drinks, sweets and snacks, toiletries and household, and last other. Departments without an entry are left out, so in the shop you go down the list from top to bottom.
A fixed word list in your language finds the department from the name, without AI: semi-skimmed milk is under dairy and chilled, orange juice under drinks, and a quantity in front, as in 6 eggs, makes no difference. Whatever the list does not know stands under “Other”.
If something is in the wrong place, tap “Change department” on the entry and choose the right one. The choice sticks to the name: when someone puts it on the list again, it lands there by itself, up to 90 days after the last entry with that name was removed. “Automatic” lets the word list sort it again.
Only the shopping list has departments. A packing list and your other lists keep the order in which you wrote them.
The meal plan for the week
Beside the shopping list there is the chip “Meal plan”: the week from Monday to Sunday, each day with “Lunch” and “Dinner”. A tap on a slot opens “Add a meal”: under “What are you having?” you write the meal as free text, with a link to the recipe and the ingredients, one per line, if you like. Below it the app offers what you entered in the last 90 days; a tap also fills in the link and ingredients.
“Put ingredients on the shopping list” puts each line on the shopping list, under its department; a quantity in front, as in 500 g flour, becomes the quantity. What is already open there stays as it is.
“Today” shows what there is today: “Today’s meals” names lunch and dinner, and a tap leads to the meal plan. Everyone with an account in your family sees and changes it.
What lists and the meal plan cannot do
- A fixed word list sorts the departments; words it does not know stand under “Other” until you choose the department. The app does not know the order of a particular shop.
- There are no private lists. Everyone with an account in your family sees and changes every list.
- Lists and the meal plan need an internet connection: without one, nothing can be added or ticked off.
- Beside the shopping list a family has up to 20 lists, each with up to 500 entries, open and done ones together.
- You can neither rename nor delete the shopping list, and a list cannot be copied: for the next holiday you create it again from the template.
- The meal plan knows lunch and dinner and takes free text: the app brings no recipes, no ideas from AI and no nutritional values, and only your browser opens a link to a recipe.
Frequently asked questions about lists and the meal plan
Which lists can I create?
Any list your family needs: a packing list for the holiday, the things for a children’s birthday party, what still has to be done before the school holidays. Each list has a name and, if you like, an emoji shown before the name.
Can I save recipes?
As a link: when you add a meal, you enter the address of the page with the recipe under “Link to the recipe (optional)”. In the plan it shows as “Recipe” and opens in your browser; the app does not store the recipe itself.
Does the whole family see my packing list?
Yes. Everyone with an account in your family sees and changes it, the grandparents too with an account of their own; what someone ticks off is ticked off for everyone.
Can the same entry be on two lists?
Yes. “Sun cream” can be on the shopping list and on the packing list at the same time, and each list ticks it off on its own. On the same list an entry stands only once: if someone writes it again, it stays one entry.
What happens to the entries when I delete a list?
They go with the list, for everyone in the family. That is why the app asks first, and the list cannot be brought back afterwards. If you only want to get rid of what is done, use “Remove done items”.
How do the ingredients get onto the shopping list?
When you add or change a meal, you tap “Put ingredients on the shopping list”: each line becomes an entry on the shopping list, under its department and with the quantity in front. What is already open there keeps its quantity.
