Routines for children: pictures instead of notes, stars instead of nagging
Routines for kids with pictures: getting dressed, brushing teeth, packing the school bag, each task with a drawing a child recognises without reading. In the morning, at midday and in the evening it shows what is due and how far the child has got, and on the family display the child ticks it off. For finished tasks, children can collect stars towards a wish that you set.
How a routine comes about
Add your child
Under “Family” you add your child as a member and switch on “Child”; no account of their own is needed. Under “Emoji” they can get an animal or another sign to recognise themselves by.
Routine from a template
On the “Tasks” page, “Routine from a template” opens the “Morning routine”, “After school” or the “Evening routine”. You choose one or more children, “Every day” or “Monday to Friday”, and tap away whatever does not fit.
Choose pictures
Each task of a template comes with its picture. A routine of your own gets one of 25 drawings or an emoji under “Picture”, and morning, midday or evening under “Time of day”.
Tick off on the display
On the family display the child taps their name and ticks off their routines with one finger. The same ticks then show on the “Tasks” page as well.
Times of day and pictures: a routine a child understands without reading
A routine is a task that comes back and has a time of day. With a weekly repetition it can apply on certain days only: “Monday to Friday” is one routine rather than five. It has no clock time, because in the morning a child does not need 7:15 but the order of things.
The pictures are our own drawings, flat and bold, so that a child aged four to eight recognises them: a T-shirt on a hanger, a toothbrush, a school bag. Each time of day has its own picture next to it, a sun for the morning, a plate for midday and a moon for the evening.
Progress: 3 of 5, and no red piles
On the “Tasks” page each child has a card with every time of day and how far it has got, for example Morning: 3 of 5, with a bar. The time of day it is now is open as long as something is left to do in it, and a tap opens the others. In “Today” each child has one line such as Ben · Morning 3/5 instead of five separate tasks.
A missed routine does not become overdue. If a child skips a morning, the same routine is there the next morning, and on days outside its rule, such as a Saturday for Monday to Friday, it does not show at all. Familienplaner clears away completed routines after 30 days.
Stars and wishes: what you decide
Under “Stars” a task brings up to five stars, and “Collect stars” in “Routine from a template” gives each task one. The stars go to the child the task belongs to; a repeating task gives them on its day, and ticked off before its day it gives none.
On the “Stars and wishes” page each child has a wish list, for example Cinema for eight stars. The family’s admins add wishes, redeem them with “Redeem” once there are enough stars, and change a balance with “Adjust”. Each child collects for themselves, with no comparison between brothers and sisters.
On the family display: the child’s board
When Ben taps his name on the family display, “Hello Ben” opens, with his star balance if he has tasks with stars or wishes. At the top, in large size, is the time of day it is now, morning until 11, midday until 5 pm, evening after that, with its routines as large tick boxes with a picture and, if they bring stars, “+1 ★”. The other times of day are folded away, and below come his wishes with a row of stars up to the price.
Once a time of day is finished, it says “You did it!” with a short movement that is left out when the tablet asks for reduced motion, and without sound. In the family view a child’s routines take one line, and if a task without a person brings stars, the display asks “Who did it?”: the child named gets them, and with “Nobody” no one does.
What routines for children cannot do
- Routines have no clock time, only a time of day: morning, midday or evening. Something at a fixed time, such as training at 5 pm, goes in as an event.
- Only children without an account of their own collect stars. If a child gets an account, their stars and wishes stay stored, but no new ones are added.
- There is no leaderboard, and stars cannot be moved from one child to another.
- There are no photos of your own for routines, and no profile picture either: the pictures are the app’s drawings or an emoji.
- The display plays no sound and does not call for attention by itself; a child looks when the time comes.
- On the display stars only come and go with the tick of a task. Giving or taking them away by hand and redeeming happen only on the “Stars and wishes” page, by the family’s admins.
Frequently asked questions about routines for children
From what age do routines with pictures work?
The pictures are drawn for children who cannot read yet, roughly from nursery age; with stars and wishes, primary school children stay keen too. Which tasks suit which age is up to you: any task of a template can be left out.
What happens if a child skips a morning?
Nothing bad: a routine does not become overdue. On the next day of its rule it is there again, with nothing piling up, and it brings stars when the child ticks it off on that day.
Can I upload my own pictures?
No. You can choose from 25 drawings for typical tasks, from getting dressed to lights out, and any emoji; no photos of children are stored for this.
Who gets the stars of a task that belongs to nobody?
The child who ticks it off on the family display: in their own view without being asked, in the family view the child named after “Who did it?”. With “Nobody” it is done without stars, and on the display it can only be reopened in the view of the child who got the stars.
