School holidays, public holidays and birthdays in your family calendar

No typing them in, no extra subscription: choose your federal state or canton once, and Familienplaner shows the school holidays and public holidays there, for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Your family’s birthdays come back every year too, with the age each person is turning.

How holidays and birthdays get into your calendar

  1. Choose your state or canton

Whoever manages the family chooses the country under “Family and region” in the settings, and below it the federal state or canton. From then on the public holidays of your region are in the calendar, and the school holidays too, as long as “Show school holidays in the calendar” is switched on.

  2. See holidays at a glance

The week and the month show school holidays, public holidays and birthdays on their days. In “Today”, “Coming up” lists what lies ahead over the next few weeks: birthdays, public holidays and the first day of the next school holidays.

  3. Add birthdays

Under “Family”, enter a member’s birthday in the field “Birthday (optional)”. Further birthdays, such as Grandma’s or a godchild’s, go on the same page under “Birthdays”, with name, day and month; the year is optional.

What holidays look like in the calendar

From 1024 pixels wide, on a tablet in landscape or on a computer, school holidays run across their days in the month as a band, with their name and their last day. From 1280 pixels the week shows them the same way. On narrower screens the holiday days in the month are striped, and the list for the chosen day names the holidays.

Public holidays have their own symbol and say what kind they are: “Public holiday” or “Observed regionally or a day off school”, such as Berchtoldstag in Zurich or Leopoldi-Tag in Vienna. The names of holidays appear in the language you have chosen in the app; where there is no translation, in German, as with these two.

The family display on the kitchen tablet shows them as well, in the cards for today, tomorrow and the day after.

Where the holiday dates come from, and how far ahead they go

The school holidays come from the OpenHolidays API, an open data collection under the ODbL licence, as of 12 October 2026. Where the source is wrong or something is missing, Familienplaner corrects the data by hand, following the official page. It works out the public holidays itself, year by year.

The settings show, below the switch, up to which date the holidays for your region are stored. For Germany the data reaches into summer 2030, for Austria to early 2029. In Switzerland it depends on the canton: Geneva up to 2030, Vaud, Fribourg, Valais and Ticino so far only to early 2027.

In Austria, holidays that are not yet final are marked “provisional”. In Switzerland, cantons and often municipalities set the holidays: if a band does not apply to every school, it says whom it applies to, or “depends on the school or municipality”, as in Graubünden. The Zurich holidays are marked “recommended, schools may differ”.

Birthdays that come round every year

Family members’ birthdays come from their date of birth; any others you add once. After that they appear in the calendar every year, under “Coming up” and on the family display, with the age if the year is known: “Grandma turns 70”.

Anyone born on 29 February celebrates on 28 February in years without a leap day. The calendar link for Google, Apple or Outlook includes the birthdays too, there without the year of birth.

When training stops for the school holidays

If your region has school holidays that apply to all schools, a repeating event can skip them: on the event, choose the rule under “Repeat” and then “Not during school holidays”. Tuesday training then disappears during the autumn holidays and is back afterwards.

Where holidays apply only to some municipalities or types of school, the series still takes place. After the last known holiday it carries on without a break until new data arrives.

What Familienplaner doesn’t do with holidays

  • School and public holidays exist only for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, by federal state or canton. Without a region you only see the nationwide public holidays and no school holidays.
  • For the canton of Solothurn the school holidays are missing from the data, though the public holidays are there. The settings then say “There are no holidays on record for your region.”
  • If your school’s holidays differ from those of the state or canton, for example with extra days off, the calendar still shows the region’s holidays. You add the different days as events yourself.
  • The calendar link for Google, Apple or Outlook contains your events and birthdays, but no school or public holidays.
  • After the last stored day no school holidays appear in the calendar until new data has been added. How far ahead the data goes differs from region to region.

Frequently asked questions about school and public holidays

Which countries and regions have school holidays?

All 16 federal states in Germany, all 9 in Austria and 25 of the 26 Swiss cantons. For Solothurn the school holidays are missing from the data, but Familienplaner knows the public holidays there too. For other countries there are neither school nor public holidays.

Do I need to subscribe to a school holiday calendar?

No. Once a state or canton is chosen, the holidays are in your family calendar, with no subscription and no file to download. If you want another calendar as well, such as your school’s or your municipality’s, you can add it under “Subscribe to calendars”.

What if our school has different holidays?

The calendar shows the holidays of your state or canton as they are in the data. If your school has extra days off, add them as events. If the holidays don’t fit at all, whoever manages the family switches off “Show school holidays in the calendar”; the public holidays stay.

Do the holidays also appear in my Google or iPhone calendar?

No. The calendar link you add to Google, Apple or Outlook brings your events and the birthdays, but not school or public holidays. You see those in Familienplaner and on the family display.

How do I add Grandma’s birthday?

Under “Family”, in “Birthdays”: enter the name, day and month, the year if you like, then “Add”. With the year, the calendar also shows how old she is turning. Any account in the family can add birthdays.

Can I hide the school holidays?

Yes. Whoever manages the family switches off “Show school holidays in the calendar” in the settings; they then disappear from the family display too. The public holidays stay, because they belong to the region you chose.
